1970 Dodge Challenger T/A

Historic Overview:

Sharing the same platform of Plymouth Barracuda new generation, Dodge introduced on August 1969 the all-new Challenger to enter the Pony-Car market competition, available either as a hardtop or as convertible.

The base Challenger had as standard engines the 225 Slant Six (145 HP) or 318 V8 (230 HP) at no extra cost and 3-speed manual transmission, but engine choices could let you fit it with a 330-HP 383 4-barrel V8.

If you wanted more luxury, you could order any Challenger with the SE package, which included leather bucket seats, vinyl roof, and "formal" rear window. The main performance version was the R/T, which brought in the 335-HP 383 Magnum V8 and TorqueFlite automatic transmission as standard features, with the possibility of installing the 440 Magnum (375 HP), the 440 Six Pack (390 HP) and the 426 Hemi (425 HP), the last one would cost extra $1,228 and would require heavy-duty equipment (chosen by only 356 buyers).

Standard R/Ts also came with two fake hood scoops, but for $97 you could install the Shaker hood with a double real scoop. Another limited performance version was the T/A, created in order to let Dodge race the Sports Car Club of America's Trans Am Sedan Championiship, which exclusively featured the 340 Six Pack engine, equipped with three 2-barrel carburetors and other modifications which led it to develop about 350 HP, instead of 290 HP - the very same rating of Camaro Z/28 and Mustang Boss 302 - as it was officially rated.

It also featured as standard equipment a matte-black fiberglass hood, side dual exhausts, side body tape stripes, front disc brakes, amongst other items. Sadly, on the racetracks the Challenger T/A couldn't keep up with the other competitors - in despite of being able to close a quarter of mile in about 14 seconds - and Dodge would leave the Trans Am series already on late 1970.
