Historic Overview:
For 1971, the whole Plymouth's mid-size range was fully restyled and the name Belvedere was discontinued, now being Satellite the base mid-size model. The brand-new bodywork was much more aggressive, attractive and also discrete, but that wasn't enough to increase the sales, which decreased much more than twice as the previous.
Besides, the GTX barely appeared on brochures and advertisements, consequently it made buyers fear that the model would be discontinued and that's what happened by the end of year. On the other hand, the GTX performance was kept somewhat intact with both 440 engines being detuned in just 5 HP each due to the new pollution regulamentations.
